Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, started out working as a local newspaper journalist. He made comic books early on and sent them to his friends. After stapling them together, he even sold them out of his local record store. Groening didn’t get his big break until 10 years after graduating. And then it took 2 years for The Simpsons to air its first show.
Twitter is like having a Ferrari sitting outside your house but not knowing how to drive. The potential of social media is incredible but if you don't know how to use it, it's a source of frustration.
If you work a full-time job, you might not have the time to work out all the nuances of Twitter, but I've been experimenting over the last few months, and want to share how you enter the 1% club.
I’ve gone from 425 to 9.5k followers in 5 months whilst keeping my day job, here's how you do it.
When you are starting out you have an advantage, everyone, I mean everyone, started at zero.
It means that if you can start that story and share it well, you’ll appeal to a lot of people. I know, you just hit 204 followers and made $20/month it feels insignificant. People won’t care. Surely?
Trust me, they will. One of my major lessons over the last 7 weeks of tweeting is that people love the small wins. People get excited because they’ve been there, they can resonate with it.
If you’re small, tell the world about it. Let them see your tiny wins, and be okay with sharing that you got 7 new followers. It’s these tiny wins that make up the big stuff, don’t be embarrassed by them, share them.
Every social media platform is focused on one thing: attention.
If you’re creating on the internet part-time, you’ll want to think about how you can capture and harness people’s attention. Platforms want people to stay on their site, so content that captures and retains attention will be spread.
It’s your job to work out how you do that, a few ways I’ve seen work well:
The best way to start doing this is by working backwards and understanding what stuff resonates well with people. Find the best posts from your favourite creators and ask yourself ‘why did this do well?’
The best way to have incredible content inside of Twitter is to do cool stuff outside of Twitter.
If you spend your entire life on Twitter, replying to comments, scrolling and reading, you’ll have no time to gather the experiences to talk about on Twitter.
It’s why it’s important you limit your time on the platform. I’ve set clear rules for myself around how often I should be posting and how long I should spend engaging.
That’s it. And it sounds a lot but I scheduled all my posts a month in advanced and I’m working on a system to leverage articles to create threads.
The best strategy on planet Earth for growth is fun.
I’m serious. Who is going to be able to beat you if you love the game? If you love the game so much that it’s playing to you?
Nobody is the answer.
All those people doing it because they want followers, validation and whatever else will crumble whilst your there having the best time ever.
That’s the thing. When you love the game, you realise that you’ve already won. If you just love what you’re doing because you’re doing it. There is no milestone to hit, no mountain to climb, you are there.
It’s honestly, magical.
Think of it like this: Twitter is a place to test ideas.
The feedback loop is quick, the effort is low and there are millions of people on Twitter. It’s a great place to test what works and what doesn’t. The trick is to not be married to an idea. Test ideas like you don’t care.
Seriously. Become unattached to what an idea is or how daunting pressing publish feels. It’s all just data for your weekly review.
Pressing publish shouldn’t feel scary. You should do it so often that it just feels like second nature.
